Control Center Focus Button Not Working

Similar to many other users, I have been experiencing an issue with my Focus button in Control Center. It is identical to this entry from over a year ago:

Control Center Focus Button Not Working - Apple Community

Specifically, when I try to start Do Not Disturb via the "moon button" on the Focus button in Control Center the button toggles between gray and dark, acting as if it is doing something but not actually enabling DND. If I long-press the Focus button and enable DND there, then I am able to toggle the moon button on/off in Control Center. The icon goes from white moon on gray button to purple moon on white button. HOWEVER, if I turn DND off it reverts to the disfunction again and only works by long-pressing the Focus button.

iPhone 13 Pro, currently updated (fully) to iOS 16.5. Restarting does not fix the issue. I have restarted, force-restarted, shutdown and restarted, reset all settings, erased the phone and restored from iOS backup, both over the air and via Finder on my Mac. It also occurred on my prior iPhone 13 Pro. None of this has changed the behavior. I am saving the scorched-earth technique of fully wiping the phone and setting up new for my final option..., but I think I'm there.

As an aside, frequently I am not receiving notifications that I have (correctly) configured. It feels like it could be a Focus-related thing, but I can't tell.

Make sure DND is set up correctly. Do Not Disturb setup has been made much more flexible with iOS 16, but this has come at the cost of much more complication. To get it working again, do these steps ONCE:

  • Tap Settings
  • Tap Focus
  • Tap on any Focus settings that you will never use and remove them (you can add them back later if you change your mind, and even create new, custom ones)
  • Tap Do Not Disturb
  • Tap People
  • Tap Allow Notifications From
  • If anyone is listed who should not call you when DND is on delete them; if you don’t want any calls from anyone, any time, delete all people
  • Tap the dropdown next to Allow Calls From and choose Allowed People Only
  • Optionally, tap on Apps, then Allow Notifications From and don’t add any apps.

All of the above is a one-time setup. After that, turn DND on or off with the Control Center Focus button. You can optionally set one or more schedules by going to:

Settings/Focus/Do Not Disturb/Set a Schedule.

Thanks - already done. Unfortunately, other than Feedback (which may or may not actually get to the engineers), the current support paradigm is set up to handle discrete configuration issues, not bugs. And the Advisors all now claim not to have any mechanisms to report things that even *they* think is a bug.

Apple is officially unaware of the issue (despite >1 yr of others with the same behavior), they have seen the issue demonstrated on my device, and they were unable to offer any remedy. As the ultimate fix to all iOS issues, I have wiped my phone and set up as new, only to see the issue continue. It's a bug.

I am reminded of when Microsoft once officially said Windows was flawless and always worked perfectly until you installed apps....

We have collected logs and will wait to see what engineering has to say (if anything).

In practice, and as officially stated by Apple Support personnel, DND is a pre-configured button that is a part of Focus. Unless one sets up other Focus scenarios or adds the other tweaks and specificities, no intervention should be necessary to use DND. It should function as it is named: Do Not Disturb in all situations, unless modified.

It's a blunt approach, but unsophisticated users should be able to use it without reprogramming their phones. Simple if you need, complex if desired. Same as it ever was (for Apple). Any other scenario is bad coding. Just sayin'.

Edit: Don't let my measly 8 points mislead you. I've been an Apple Nerd since '84 but I usually have as much use for the Discussions as I do for SM. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Even with the old DND, you had to do some initial configuration to get it to work the way you wanted it.

You can either sit around and be unhappy about the fact that things have changed. Or, you can accept the fact that, at the cost of a very small investment in time, you get a far more flexible system. The choice is entirely yours.

You can also let Apple know your thoughts on the matter here:

And people wonder why Apple tends not to give people options.....

P.S. I honestly don't care how many points you have. Or how long you've been using Apple products.

Pardon my snark, but don't get salty. Apple has always allowed slightly sub-infinite customization on most of its products. But at the same time, the products all work on a basic level straight out of the box for those that don't want complexity.

DND is just like that. I've personally never wanted to use the Focus options -- just on/off, so I never set them up. But DND has always worked (as designed) as a basic way to mute your phone. If you want to get fancy, you are free to do so. But as a basic functionality, tapping the DND button turns it on and off. Full stop.

My issue is that my device stopped working like that. There are times when it still does, just not reliably. Intermittently flaky behaviors are generally a bug, not a feature. Certainly I can go through your 10 steps to *not configure anything* but Apple has never required users to do that sort of thing and that has not been my experience with DND.

Serious answer: Yes, but it only keeps it from making sound.

There are times when one is performing a task on the phone that you don't want disturbed by a silenced but visibly or haptic-ly announced phone call or message, a notification, or any other interruption that we normally want from our phones. And more plainly, some apps stop working if they are interrupted.

DND is designed for those situations because Silent Mode doesn't address that. Otherwise you'd also have to disable your notifications completely.

But on a basic level, DND is a design feature that I use (as a simple toggle) that used to work well but doesn't work right for me right now.

Then the problem is your device, not Focus. I have no problems simply tapping the Control Center button to turn on or off DND.

I would suggest you start with some basic troubleshooting. I would start with backing up the phone and restoring it from back up or resetting all settings. Both can be a bit annoying but may resolve the problem. Which one you start with depends on which annoys you most.

Pardon my snark, but don't get salty.

I will keep in mind that it's okay for you to get snarky but not for me to do so.

Sorry. I thought you read the words in my prior comments.

As I mentioned in my original post, and several times after that, I have done all the troubleshooting that there is to be done (under the guidance of Apple Support personnel), including your recommendations, and following up with the much more draconian act of setting the phone up as new. As I also mentioned before you replied to this, we have collected logs and it’s now at engineering for analysis.

And my snark was not aimed at you, but at Apple. Stan all you want, but they are imperfect in their implementation sometimes.
