Logic Pro iOS - UI criticism
After trying trial i decided to not continue, cause i have very serious problems with some particular UI details. I am experienced iOS music apps user (using iOS for my music production since 2011) so it's not that i am new to this space and just need to adopt.
I decided to summarise it here, just in case devs are listening and there is any chance they improve this aspect, cause i would really like to use Logic on iOS, on desktop is Logic my most favourite DAW i ever used.
Anyway, here few random thoughts...
1/ improved UI of stock plugins
Stock plugins are just long scrollable list of almost randomly placed kbobs and buttons. With plugins which have just few controls is not that bad (not good either), but for example for Sculpture is disaster. You can't do any more meaningful sound design without endless scrolling up and down. This is really bad, stock plugins needs nice UI, it is possible to put a lot of parameters into one screen, many third party plugins managed that. Not needed to endless scrolling, system of tabs split to logical blocks of given plugin works perfectly
2/ clip editor view, plugin view, mixer view - they all MUST remember size
Now working in Logic is all the time about resizing view accordions. Even If you set some view full screen, after you switch to other, previous one stays half-sized and other one just opens half sized too. (For example i open clip editor, enlarge it to fullscreen, then i tap mixer button, now clip editor is resized to half screen to make rest of half screen place for mixer). Then i turn off mixer and clip editor stays half screen, so i need to resize it again.
Solution: Possibility to switch behaviour of individual views (clip editor, plugin editor, mixer) to be in "toggle mode" - i man opening one closes completely other one. This + remembering last set size would be major UI improvement. Of course, ideally optional, if some users may not like this idea.
3/ ability to turn off animation when switching between views
Just instantly jump from one to other. That default SwiftUI animation of view accordions is for me just extremely annoying and especially with combination of third party plugins it often causes UI lagging (and sometimes even crashes). I would strongly prefer if oopening clip editor, plugin editor, mixer whould cause just instantly open it, without scrolling/opening animation.
I really hope devs will consider those ideas.
One note bellow line - heard some criticism from experienced third party plugin developers that Logic way how automation is implemented (i mean not UI part, but internally how it communicates with plugins) is weird, non standard, actually following the part of API documentation where is explicitly mentioned that this is not suggested way. They must do weird workarounds in their plugins to have them working in Logic, even through they are which are perfectly working in any other iOS DAW. So maybe this is worth to consider, to hold more own standards and do things like it is suggested in documentation.
