experience stomach inflammation/pain every time I use a laptop (even at a distance)

I experience stomach inflammation, characterized by a prickly/burning pain, whenever I use most laptops, especially the newer models. Surprisingly, this issue doesn't occur with my older models like HP or older Lenovo laptops. The problem began about a year ago and persists to this day. Despite my attempts to keep the laptop at 3-4 feet distance, use external devices, or change rooms, the pain emerges within a few hours of laptop usage. However, if I refrain from using these newer laptops for a day or two, the pain completely subsides. The discomfort is particularly prominent when using my 2022 Macbook Pro, older Macbook Air and 2023 Lenovo Thinkpad. I have investigated for high electromagnetic fields and magnetic fields, but they don't appear to be significantly elevated in most of these devices. I'm uncertain about the specific component that may be generating harmful frequency, vibration, or field. Other than this I am completely healthy and have a normal healthy lifestyle. I have used laptops for decades and never had any issues till recently. I never use laptops near my body and always keep it on a desk while using. I'm interested to know if others have encountered a similar issue and if they have found any effective solutions. Thank you for any insights you can provide.

One more thought that occurred to me recently: try reducing the brightness of your Mac's display, if you haven't done that already.

Why? I notice nearly everyone watching me use a Mac immediately pokes at the keyboard to increase its brightness to the point it causes me discomfort. Although in my case it's strictly visual, if I were to use a display at brightness levels that high without sunglasses, who knows what other physiological effects it might cause.

They probably don't understand how I can use a screen that dim any more than I can understand how they could stare into something so bright.

This is not to diminish your concerns about EMF or other possible reasons for your discomfort. It's just a thought.

Hi, I understand, i did go to doctor but they could not find any issues and told me to reduce laptop exposure if that resolves the issues, ...

You: "It hurts when I do this."

Doctor: "Don't do that."

These days I have grown to have about as much confidence in "medical professionals" as I do "IT professionals". All the good ones I used to know have given up for being unwilling to play along with the status quo. Simply put your concerns will not be worth their time to address, which is usually allocated to them by non-medical authorities beyond their control.

Unfortunately you will need to become your own expert in these matters. It may seem like a waste of time, but you might want to contact Apple and report your experience, subjective as it may be. I did that a number of years ago with a MacBook Air whose display became visually uncomfortable after a software update. Whatever the anomaly may have been was not quantifiable, other than a sense of discomfort after using the Mac for maybe a half hour or more. Somewhat surprisingly they took an active interest in my report. It was addressed in a subsequent macOS update. Shortly thereafter Apple contacted me to ask if the changes they implemented were effective, and I reported they were. Case closed.

Hi John,

I usually prefer to keep the brightness of my device at a medium/low level and turn off the blue light. I have tried various settings such as keeping Bluetooth off, keeping it away from my body, using a grounded extension cord, and using an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Unfortunately, none of these measures have worked. As a result, I have ordered a 20-foot cable to connect my device to my Dell dock, monitor, and keyboard setup, and I will place it away from my room.

I also contacted Apple, and they took notes and opened a case regarding health and safety. However, they are now requesting doctor's reports and write-ups to confirm that the issue is indeed caused by the Apple laptop before proceeding further. I'm unsure of what exactly "moving forward" entails, as my intention was simply to bring the matter to their attention so they could conduct their own research with my input as necessary. Currently, I'm not sure if I have the time or motivation to go through the process of doctor appointments again, especially considering that I am perfectly fine as long as I stay away from newer laptops.

The issue persists with MacBook Pro/Air, Lenovo XI Carbon, HP EliteBook, and other newer laptops. Interestingly, the old HP EliteBook doesn't seem to cause any noticeable issues at all.

I sincerely appreciate your helpful responses and the time you've taken to help me gain a better understanding of this matter.

Regards,

This would be a medical issue— consult a qualified doctor.

What else are you doing while using your laptop? Conversely, when you refrain from using it, what are you doing instead?

I am not attempting to minimize or dismiss your concerns, but you appear to be seeking electromagnetic reasons for the symptoms you are experiencing, while the cause may be something else. It could be your posture while using the laptop, or something else you are doing (or not doing) while using it. You might be drinking too much coffee, or perhaps not enough. Whatever you're doing, you're doing for long periods of time — you wrote the symptoms appear within a few hours of computer use in one sitting, and that strikes me as way too much time. After all, if you're using a Mac, you're not outside enjoying some fresh air and sunshine. Everyone needs to get up and walk around for a while. Maybe that's every twenty minutes or a half hour, but in my admittedly inexpert opinion, even one hour of uninterrupted attention is too much.

These are admittedly simplistic and bad examples and I want to reiterate they probably do not describe your circumstances, which I have no way of knowing. All electronic appliances radiate some amount of energy. There is no escaping that fact. I merely want to draw your attention away from computers themselves as the sole source of your discomfort. Perhaps it is, perhaps it isn't. There is no way for any of us to even speculate.

Perhaps this will help you to seek other possible causes for the discomfort you perceive.

Absolutely, your statement completely resonates with me. One of the main reasons I decided to post here was to bring attention to this issue to other laptop users. It was purely by chance and fueled by my skepticism towards modern western medicine that I discovered this correlation between laptops and my stomach issues.

During my nearly year-long struggle with this problem, I came across numerous online forums and videos where people shared similar stomach issues such as ulcers, colitis, pain, inflammation, and gastrointestinal problems. Many of them had been undergoing treatments and surgeries for years without any improvement. I felt very sad seeing their suffering. One doctor prescribed me strong medicines, which I refused to take, as I wanted to treat the cause, not the symptoms. Later when I told him this was the issue, he said stay away from them then. This led me to wonder how many of them could potentially find relief simply by abstaining from the use of electronics for 1-2 weeks, just as I did. I strongly believe that there could be many others who have not yet discovered this correlation. Sharing seemed like the right thing to do, and it may help shed light on a broader problem.

When it comes to corporations, I find it challenging to place complete trust in their claims. Their primary motivation usually revolves around obtaining the minimum necessary approvals to sell more products. I have had my fair share of negative experiences with various products. It is through peer-to-peer sharing of issues and solutions that we can collectively contribute to making these products somewhat safer.

Thank you for bringing attention to these important aspects. Have a great weekend!

Thanks John! those are all very valid points. My lifestyle is normal/active/healthy. My average daily usage of laptops is 1-2 hours with ample breaks. I have proper setup and correct posture. I don’t consume any coffee or alcohol or sodas etc. I love nature and spend plenty time daily in nature. I am completely healthy and happy, except this odd issue. Went to doctor but they couldn’t figure anything concrete. Also the issue gets resolved within 1-2 days of me stopping using newer laptops. Also it does not happen when I use older laptops no matter how long. Hence asking fellow laptop users.

While lenovo and Macbook air take 2-3 hours of total usage (even with breaks over 1-2 days) to cause major pain in stomach; my 2022 Macbook pro produces the same effect just in 20-30 minutes.

I always loved apple products due to excellent quality and overall experience, but now after investing thousands on my macbook pro, few months ago, I am unable to use it. It took me months to figure this trigger when I noticed my symptoms improved fast when I stopped using laptops. So I carefully tested the correlation several times, as initially I myself couldn’t believe it.

I am very thankful for all replies. Pardon me if I pasted on wrong thread/forum. Have a blessed day!

I expect they already have conducted reasonable resect, and concluded there is no threat to human health and well-being in any way.

Yours is the first and only instance of any such complaint seen here. So the next research to be done revolves around YOU, in a very central way.

Apple has just become fearful, typical of all large organizations that have attained such a high profile. Perhaps they will take your concerns to heart, or perhaps they will do exactly nothing unless you were to get a Certified Medical Professional to put his or her credibility on the line, which Apple would presumably attack. I know that's disappointing but it's hardly surprising.

Regarding those aforementioned Medical Professionals, they're not going to do a thing without plenty of prohibitively expensive diagnostic testing, all of which is certain to come up negative. Even if they do, they're not going to administer anything that cannot be put in a pill bottle or in a syringe.

A good, kind and experienced physician friend of mine explained that you can literally spend a million dollars on various tests and diagnostics, and they won't help. Two million dollars. Doesn't matter. Western medicine is beyond fixing at this point. He gave up on it a while ago.

Last night but not the first night I was laying on my back the couch playing on the phone . So the phone I have it propped on my chest right by my rib cage and my stomach going through the phone watching movies doing whatever I do and then the paging start getting hot or I can feel radiation or some type of heat coming through the bottom of the phone where the charger goes and the speakers are at. I move the phone off my body cause I feel burning sensation but now my chest/stomach is in so much pain it lasted for about 2hrs. Then I went to sleep and this morning I still feel it very very slightly but I seem ok but that’s crazy and weird
