Does sharing a iCloud share Photos library duplicate the Photos library size?

I’m using a 200 Gb iCloud plan for my documents, books, photos, etc. on my Mac. Total iCloud usage is 135 Gb with 110 Gb being used for Photos. I’m keeping the originals on my Mac and the photos db on my Mac is 130 Gb so the 110 Gb I see on the iCloud Drive and my iPhone are thumbnails until accessed.

As I understand it, activating shared Photos creates a duplicate library. Will the affect existing iCloud size for Photos? If so, it will bump me into the next storage plan at 2 Tb, which I really don’t need. Anyone have experience with the Photos shared library that can confirm this?

Greetings MRYFLYGUY,

According to the resource you used to reach us:

"When you contribute photos and videos to iCloud Shared Photo Library, they move out of your Personal Library and into the Shared Library. You can join one Shared Library, and you can choose what to share, or automatically share content straight from the camera. All participants have equal permissions to add, edit, and delete content in the Shared Library, while the person who set up the Shared Library, the library creator, provides iCloud storage for all of the content. Everyone else gets access to the Shared Library content without it counting towards their iCloud storage.

When you join a Shared Library, iCloud captures a one-time snapshot of your photo library database and associated metadata and stores it for up to six months. This helps with a smooth transition of your content to Shared Photo Library. Any photos that were in your library at the time of the snapshot that are subsequently deleted are also stored in iCloud for up to six months. " How to use iCloud Shared Photo Library

We hope this helps!

Sincerely.

I missed that first paragraph somehow but have seen the second one, maybe somewhere else. Thanks.

Concerning the creation of the shared library. I have all my media files on an external drive/volume. When the the shared library is created, is the same location used or can you set the location of the shared library? I guess I can do a backup and try it.
