File size of scanned documents - Finder vs Notes

When scanning a document in Finder (Import from iPhone > Scan Documents) a 7 page document ends up being extremely large (over 20 MB).

Using the Notes app to scan and then export PDF, the size is a manageable 2 MB.

I need to scan many docs to be emailed, and I don't necessarily need or want them in my Notes app. Is there a way to skip the Notes step without having these gigantic file sizes?

There isn't anything special about the Notes app. It's just that Notes is automatically reformatting your scans to JPEG or similar when it exports to PDF. So if you try some other method that skips that step, then you have to deal with the originals. Here are the built-in apps that support this feature: Continuity Camera: Use your iPhone or iPad to scan documents or take a picture on your Mac - Apple Support

There may be 3rd party apps that can do this too. But however you do it, if you want the originals smaller, you'll have to resize or reformat them yourself. Maybe you could scan in all the originals and find a scripting solution to export them all.

Thanks for the replies. It seems to me that using the continuity camera on anything but Notes gives you a hi-res large file. I've even tried using Preview to Export/Quartz Filter/Reduce File Size. This just resulted in a very blurry PDF. The only way I've been able to generate a clear useful (size file size) PDF was through the extra step of importing into Notes and then exporting to a file on my computer. Then deleting the unwanted scans in the Notes app.
