Ventura isn't giving me the option to add a ThunderBolt bridge and I really need to move my large content over this week.

I was trying to follow the instructions from some YouTube videos. On my Monterey computer when I go to the plus button one of the options is "Thunderbolt bridge" but on Ventura it just says "Thunderbolt." The result seems to be that it is connecting over Wi-Fi?! That isn't going to work. Does anyone know why Ventura isn't giving me the option to add a Thunderbolt bridge?

Both computers should have the necessary hardware 2017 iMac and 2020 MacBook Pro.

MacBook, macOS 10.15

I finally found where Thunderbolt Bridge is on Ventura. It is different from a regular Thunderbolt connection. You need to go to "manage virtual interfaces" then click "new bridge" for which you can click between a choice of four interfaces (for my four Thunderbolt ports.) Like everything in the System Settings it takes a lot more clicks to get to and is very hidden. I am not sure which Thunderbolt is 1,2,3 or 4.

The Ventura machine still says "not connected." My Monterey machine gives me a yellow light. I just wanted to give an update here before contacted Apple. Seems like others might have a hard time finding these settings as well. Hopefully Apple won't give me a hard time given that Applecare on one machine has run out. It is the one I am moving away from though.

Network interface means something like

  • Wi-Fi
  • Ethernet
  • Firewire (old Macs) - when configured as such
  • Thunderbolt - when configured as such

It's a generic term for hardware on which you can send and receive network data. (IP-over-Firewire and IP-over-Thunderbolt aren't the usual configurations of those ports, but if you are using those ports in that way, then they are network interfaces.

I don't have Ventura, or a Mac with Thunderbolt, but I'm guessing the idea is that you choose "Thunderbolt" (in step 3) and then enter a service name like "Thunderbolt Bridge" in step 4. (That "Thunderbolt Bridge" name is more for your benefit than the computer's. What the computer cares about is Thunderbolt is one of the things for which it can set up a networking service.)

With the link he sent in his forum post I still get stuck on step three "Click the Interface pop-up menu, then choose a network interface." I don't see anything that says network interface so those instructions don't make sense to me.

I am really sorry for deleting that bridge setting that I made about five years ago. I just did that because I thought perhaps much newer computers running newer OSes might need fresh settings. When I look for videos online everyone is trying to do it from an older OS.

I've got Thunderbolt as one of my options in settings on both Macs (sans "bridge" label on Ventura) so perhaps it is connecting and I don't realize it. I may just have to contact Apple Support and ask them either where they put that option or if it is in fact connecting why is it doing it so slowly. I remember the process being quite easy with Firewire. It doesn't seem like it would be harder to do. Unfortantly they seemed to have changed so many things around I think all I can do at this point is ask them.
