I have an original Macbook Air with 80gb HDD that I want to upgrade. What's possible with this machine? After a little research, it looks like I can put in an SSD and upgrade the OS to Yosemite or possibly El Capitan. Has anyone tried this?

That machine was discontinued in 2008. It can not run anything higher than macOS 10.7 Lion.
That MacBook Air has 2 GB of RAM. If it already has the applications that you need, you may still be able to get some use out of it. You'll probably find it hard to get new applications that run on Lion, with 2 GB of RAM.
