Just bought a new iMac and Time Machine does not recognize My Passport as the back up source, what to do? I can't use the USB directly to the iMac but use the adaptor bought with the iMac.
Using Apple's Disk Utility, erase that Passport drive with GUID partition type and Apple's APFS formatting. That is what Time Machine on macOS Ventura expects.

The first backup will be a full backup of your Mac, and subsequent backups will be snapshots of what has changed since the initial backup. Hopefully, you have chosen a Passport drive capacity that is 2.5 - 3x the capacity of your internal startup drive.

Have you formatted it with an Apple format? Many come with Windows formats.
A passthrough adapter is fine; a dock or a hub may cause problems. But they don'y typically come new with an adapter since Apple has no idea what externals you might have. Is this a new Mac? Or new to you?
