my Macbook Pro wakes up from sleep but there is a black screen. It is useable only after tethering to an external monitor in mirror mode. I can see a very faint image on the screen but changing brightness does nothing. It will not show safe mode options when restarted while holding down the power button. It seems everything is functioning except the screen.

if you shine a bright light at the screen, is the image present? perhaps the backlight has failed.
If it is, that is faint comfort -- there are no pieces available, just the entire display assembly, complete.

See the reply above about the backlight. That was the problem, it had gone out. Had to send the laptop in to the Apple service center from an Apple Store. It was fixed and returned to me within 4 1/2 days.
You have given me hope that it may be just the backlight. Yes, I can see a faint image on the screen, even without a light. I'm headed to the Apple store this week to see what can be done. Thanks for your reply.
