Midi Keyboards Freeze / Stuck / Hang in Both GarageBand and Logic

I have 2 different MIDI keyboards that I used to use to record in GarageBand and Logic all the time.

I did update to Ventura a couple months ago, so maybe that is a factor.

Now, I can play a little (sometime for a minute, sometimes just one note) and then the MIDI input will freeze (i.e. notes stuck down, won't play new notes).

It will unfreeze after a minute, then I'll play a few more notes, then it freezes again.

In addition to replicating this in both GarageBand and Logic Pro with multiple keyboards, I have tried multiple USB cables.

I have "reset MIDI drivers".

I have deleted preferences for both applications (and restarted the computer).

I have tried playing with and without my sustain pedal plugged in.

I have closed down all other applications.

This problem is a new development and nothing seems to fix it.

I had this problem, too, when I installed Sonoma 14.2.1. I accidentally fixed it by Muting two other Audio devices I thought might be conflicting.

The culprit was Microsoft Teams Audio Device used for MSTeams video meetings. Despite deleting the app for MSTeams, the audio device remained.

In Audio MIDI Setup, just try clicking the Mute checkbox on any audio device you don't need to use at the time. That's what worked for me. Worth a try. Hope it works for you, too.

Hello aaronmark,

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities.

First, make sure that the macOS is fully up to date. If there were supplemental updates released, be sure those have been installed since many times they will contain fixes for issues you might experience in earlier macOS releases.

You'll also want to double check the MIDI keyboards you have are compatible with macOS Ventura and if there are any firmware updates for these devices, they have been installed. If you continue to experience issues, connecting with the support team for your MIDI keyboards would be best.

Best regards.

Hey aaronmark,

Your keyboard working some months ago, has no baring on their ability to work now on newer software. Seeing as how these keyboards aren't made by Apple and since Apple doesn't develop the software for them either, the manufacturer is best equipped to assist you from here if you're having issues using them on macOS Ventura.
