MacBook Pro with PGP Encryption software won't restart

An co-worker of mine is currently using a 2009 MacBook Pro (sorry for the lack of details, but we can't get the computer running in order to provide them) which is using PGP encryption software (government contracting). The order of events is as follows: She tried opening MS Word first. The icon bounced for an unusually long time and then stopped. The application didn't open, nor was the "Beach Ball of Death" displayed. Afterwards, she tried opening MS Powerpoint, which rendered the same results. She did a hard restart and can't seem to get past the opening Apple logo. Any suggestions?

Intel, Mac OS X (10.6.4), Work Computer
