Streaming video with sound through TV

I've got an M1 MacBook Pro and when i'm HDMI connected to my TV and play a video, the video plays normally if it is on mute, the sound is played through macbook speakers, or if the sound is on bluetooth headsets. However, the video plays at super-speed if the sound goes through my TV's speakers. This is not an issue on my wife's MacBook Pro with an earlier generation Intel chip. I've adjusted the refresh rate on tv and laptop, changed around sound settings, etc. and nothing makes a difference.

Hi JakeB4St8Farm,

While it's unclear how an HDMI connection would affect playback speed, here are a few things to try:

1) Test with a different HDMI cable

2) Test with a different TV

3) Test with your Mac in safe mode per How to use safe mode on your Mac

4) Test with multiple video sources such as Apple TV, Safari video playback, videos stored in Photos, etc

If none of the above suggestions change the behavior, make sure your Mac is up-to-date with macOS software and then consult Apple Support if necessary to investigate further: Get Support

Regards.
