Mac Desktop Documents Folder Not Working (Ventura 13.4)

My Documents folder is repeatedly 'disappearing' in Finder no matter what I do to fix it. Symptoms are:

  • Documents folder disappears from Finder Sidebar, as does DropBox folder
  • I can get these both back in preferences but Document folder is broken, can't expand it or open it in Finder, shows Date Modified as -- see picture attached (DropBox access works fine)
  • If I open terminal I can cd into the Documents folder fine, ie the folder and all contained files are still there
  • Seems to have the same privileges as other folders that work, but shows up in Get Info as "You have unknown access"
  • Note that I have tried Disk Repair to repair permissions, I also have Cloud Drive turned off

Feels like it is somehow related to Cloud sync in some way - given that only the Documents folder is affected and DropBox gets 'hidden' at the same time. When I first had the problem I had Cloud Drive turned on, but have since turned it off and the problem is still happening

Has only started happening in the last week or so, not sure if there was an associated OS upgrade that triggered it

Mac mini, macOS 13.4
