you are right!
instead, you must launch Safari, and choose Preferences off the Safari menu, select general pane. it's in THAT pane.
Also very important: you should apply ALL available software updates to mavericks, so that you get updated to safari version 9, likely 9.1.3 Older versions can not work with today's encryption.
Follow the instructions in that Apple Support document, under "earlier versions of macOS."
is that specified version of FireFox present and working?
what if you open FireFox BEFORE you use a link?
Have you tried Firefox > Preferences > UNcheck Firefox as the default browser?
Thank you for your help but there no such thing in my macbook pro.
I do not have a side bar menu with desktop & dock.
I mean i do have those item but they are separated in two different icon and i scrolled into them and no trace of a defaut's web browser option.
In that case Mavericks does not offer that option. I no longer have any operating systems that old.
Which browser would you like to use instead? The reason for asking is that it may not function on Mavericks anyway. Most websites will not function with a Safari version that old either.
Because Apple provided security updates for two more versions afterward, they supplied Safari version 9 (originally issued in 10.12 El Capitan) for Mavericks as a security update. I am running Mavericks in a virtual machine on a more modern Mac, to run older software.
Ok i opened safari but in my general menu i had already set another web browser (firefoxà) as my defaut web browser whereas it keeps opening safari pages for some third app.... there must be something wrong.

I changed defaut brower directly in safari to an old browser i did not used anymore and it works.
(it does not solve my initial problem but my question here is solved thanks a lot guys for your kindness !!!!)

Yes the version of firefox specified is presend, working AND IS ALWAYS OPENED before i try to use the link.
