unread mail count in Apple mail on my mac doesn't match iCloud mail

The count of unread messages as shown in a folder on iCloud mail is incorrect. Right now I see 108 unread messages in the folder as displayed in the mail app on my mac but iCloud mail shows 126 unread messages. If I physically count the unread messages in the iCloud mail folder is totals 108, the same as the mail app.

Also - messages that are read and deleted keep coming back as unread messages.

We would like to see how we can help you with your unread Mail notifications. Which version of macOS are you currently running? If you restart the Mac with the steps in this link, does the issue return: Shut down or restart your Mac - Apple Support

"Restart your Mac

On your Mac, choose Apple menu > Restart.
If you don’t want app windows that are open to reopen when your Mac restarts, deselect “Reopen windows when logging back in.”
