I will say the Apple Watch Series 1 is a very old model.

On Apple Watch

1. Open Settings
2. Tap on General
3. Tap on Software Update

On iPhone

1. Tap on the Watch app
2. Tap on General
3. Tap on Software Update

What watchOS version are you currently on? I'll try to determine if there are a supported watchOS versions after that.

But as stated above, it's a really old model and future updates are not supported on this Apple Watch. You could also bring it in for a Genius Bar appointment, but they might just tell you to buy a new one.

What watchOS update are you trying to update to? watchOS 9 (currently) and watchOS 10 (coming this Fall) both do not support the Apple Watch Series 1.

You can recycle the device to Apple for free - Free recycling - Apple. The Apple Watch Series 1 will not qualify for a trade in value. I tried trading in a Series 3 for a family member a few months ago and that didn't qualify either.
