Syncing generally goes from the computer to the device, not the other way around. You can try:

I've previously experienced that when I bought something on my phone then plugged it into iTunes later to synch, it would prompt that there were items on my phone that were on my laptop and ask to transfer them. This isn't the case now.
I believe that synchronization from the phone, to the computer, was for songs bought directly from the iTunes Store, using the app on the phone. The idea was to bring the master library (on the computer) up to date. Synchronization of songs purchased elsewhere (e.g., on CD, or from other online music stores) was always one-way, from the computer to the iPhone / iPad / iPod.

If/when that message shows it only applies to iTunes Store purchases. To retrieve all of your content from the device see the user tip mentioned earlier by javaliga.
