You cannot use the mouse while it charges, correct.
You can still see its battery charge there.
You can plug it in overnight to charge and should be ready in the morning. The charge should last around a month at least.

The Bluetooth panel in System Preferences/Settings has an option to keep the Bluetooth icon on your menu extras panel. Then a click on that symbol reveals your paired Apple devices and their current charge percentage.
You can plug the cable into the Magic Keyboard and it will charge while you are using it. The Magic Mouse II gets fully recharged overnight via an Apple 20W charger and USB-C to lightning cable while I am sleeping. Simply a scheduling endeavor.
The battery charge for each device is visible in System Settings ➜ Bluetooth ➜ (i), for each device.
Or in the Bluetooth Menu on the menu bar.
Or in the Bluetooth icon in Control Center.
Thanks Phil0124, OK I may plug into back of keyboard and watch % there but how about charging mouse it's port is on bottom which makes using questionable.
Phil0124, once again thanks. You confirmed my suspicions, so set and wait while mouse charges or drag out an old cabled mouse and use that while charging.
You're very welcome. Glad I could help.
