Photo storage 2.5 times larger in Iphone 14 Pro compared to Iphone 11 Pro for same photos

I upgraded from iphone 11 Pro 256GB to iphone 14 pro 256GB in Jan 2023. Ever since then I have periodically received the iphone storage full message. I would restart phone and it would temporarily resolve it. The frequency has increased to a daily occurrence and I now basically have no storage left on my phone. The issue is caused by the increased storage consumption for photos which seems to be getting worse even when I delete photos.

With my 11 Pro I was only using about half the phone storage so didn't think I needed to increase the phone storage capacity to 512GB as 256GB was enough. I don't take photos in raw mode so individual photo size wasn't going to be an issue for me.

However there is an issue with the storage space that the iphone 14 Pro is consuming for the exact same set of photos compared to the iphone 11 Pro. I still have the original device and both are synching to my icloud storage but the 14 Pro uses 223.91 GB for the exact same photos that the 11 Pro only uses 95.3GB for.

I have about 6K photos and 267 videos of which most were from older phones. since getting the 14 I have taken about 290 photos but the storage difference has been there from the start.

and yes I have photo optimisation on.

the picture below shows the number of photos, videos and storage comparisons across the 2 phones. I have even compared the file sizes appearing on the metadata of individual photos and they appear the same on both phones and the metadata knows whether the photo or video was taken on the 11 Pro or the 14 Pro.

I've read articles that suggest its newer features causing the issue such as live text, detected text etc. I have tried turning these off and it has made no difference to the phone.

Also note that not all the new photos taken are 1.8MB. some are 300KB others are 1MB

Is anyone else having the same issue?

does anyone have suggestions on how to resolve it? (that isnt optimisation and turn off the features appearing in the table as those have already been tried)

i will log with apple but I suspect they will just say back-up to icloud and reset phone. Or alternatively upgrade to 16.5 in the hope it magically fixes it but i don't have enough remaining space thanks to the photo issue.

You said: "There is an issue with the storage space that the iPhone 14 Pro is consuming for the exact same set of photos compared to the iPhone 11 Pro and the majority of the photos were taken on iPhone 11 Pro."

  • You also said "both are synching to my icloud storage" But you did not mention about the "Optmised iPhone Storage" Settings.
  • Probably iPhone. 11 Pro uses "Optimize iPhone Storage" feature and you have not enabled the same on iPhone 14 Pro. This feature will store your photos in iCloud and only keep low-resolution versions on your iPhone. Manage your photo and video storage - Apple Support (IN)
  • The iPhone 14 Pro's ProRAW photos can take up to three times more storage space than the iPhone 11 Pro's 12MP photos. This is because ProRAW photos are uncompressed, which means that they contain all of the data that the camera captured. This data can then be used to edit the photos in a variety of ways, but it also means that the photos are larger in file size. Take Apple ProRAW photos with your iPhone camera

To investigate this issue further, you can try the following troubleshooting steps:

  1. Verify if any new settings on the iPhone 14 Pro, such as higher resolution or additional image processing options, are enabled by default. Adjusting these settings may help reduce the file sizes of the photos.
  2. Check if the file format for photos on the iPhone 14 Pro is the same as that of the iPhone 11 Pro. Newer models might use a more efficient file format, such as HEIC (High-Efficiency Image Format), which can reduce file sizes without compromising image quality.
  3. Go to the iPhone's settings and check if there are any storage optimization options enabled. These features, such as "Optimize iPhone Storage" in iCloud settings, can help manage storage by storing lower-resolution versions of photos locally and the original versions in the cloud.
