My Photo Storage says 180GB when i have only 128GB MAX.

Why does my photo storage take up 180 GB says on iPhone Storage but i only have 124.9 of 128 GB shown on the bar? I also cannot open photos on messages from other people, it only shows a file.

iPhone 13 Pro Max, iOS 16

Hello nelsa2x,

We understand you have an issue with your iPhone storage for the photos category and you aren't able to receive photo attachments in Messages. Part of the Messages issue may be related to your storage concern, but we'll provide some steps to go through that could help.

First, check Recently Deleted for the Photos app. That may be why the storage shows as it does.

Delete photos on your iPhone or iPad

Recover deleted photos or videos
1. Open Photos and tap the Albums tab.
2. Tap the Recently Deleted album under Utilities.
3. In iOS 16, iPadOS 16.1, or later, use Face ID or Touch ID to unlock your Recently Deleted album.
4. Tap Select.
5. Select the photo or video that you want to keep and tap Recover. If you want to recover all the photos and videos in the album, tap Recover All.
6. Tap Recover Photo to confirm.
If you accidentally delete a photo or video, you have 30 days to get it back from your Recently Deleted album. When you recover photos and videos, they go back to your Library.

Further in that linked article is how to permanently delete photos if you find them in the Recently Deleted album and need to free up storage.

Once you've done that, and show additional available storage on your iPhone, see if attachments in Messages come through. If they still aren't working properly, work through the following:

  1. Restart your iPhone
  2. Go to Settings > General > Software Update to install any iOS updates showing.
  3. Go to Settings > General > Date & Time to confirm your date and time are correct.
  4. Go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management.
    • Disable any VPNs if you have one installed.

If you continue to have issues with either Photos storage or receiving photo attachments in Messages, the next best step is to contact Apple Support directly. You can reach them here: Get Support

You can also find the support phone number for your region at this link: Contact Apple for support and service

Take care.
