If the iPhone has an Apple Lightning connection port, you can use a SanDisk iXpand flash drive to use as an external hard drive. They are available in various sizes.
You can also use that iXpand flash drive as a tool to save the photos to a real external hard drive afterwards.
iXpand Flash Drive are available at Apple Store and at Apple Authorized Service Providers.
iXpand flash drive app can be downloaded from the App Store.
See -> SanDisk iXpand-flashdrive Go -> SanDisk 64 GB iXpand Flash Drive Go - Apple
Then download the SanDisk iXpand Drive app from the App Store, see ->

In your start post: . . . . to an external hard drive?
Ah OK.
Try this -> Complete Guide to Importing Your Photos in Windows 10.
also works with Windows OS 11.
Thanks for your quick response Raycia. I'm hoping I don't have to buy more gadgets. Using an Apple Lighting connection port connected between my iPhone and HP Laptop and the Photos app on my laptop used to work to either copy or download my photos and videos to my laptop hard drive. Now I get a message "Something went wrong" when I use the Photos app to import the photos. It's like it doesn't see my iPhone (but it just imported two photos that I took this morning). I don't get it. Any thoughts about that scenario?
I'm using iCloud Photos to sync my photos - do you think it could be interfering with the import process or it requires a different approach to copying my photos to either my laptop or an external hard drive attached to it?
