IOS FILES AND FOLDERS ON MAC

How can I safely delete folders and files on Mac? I don't want to delete something that is important to the system.

iMac 21.5″, macOS 13.4

Hello wonderful2bme,

Are you trying to free up space on your iMac?

  1. Open Settings
  2. Click on General
  3. Click on Storage

This will show you what is contributing to filling up the storage on your iMac. If you tap on the i icon, you can see more details and even delete some of them from here.

Generally, anything on your Desktop and Downloads is safe to remove. You can always ask here if a directory or file is safe to remove.

I typically always see the Downloads folder contributing the most to storage because people sometimes forget to delete content here. Content being downloaded from Safari can actually be removed automatically!

  1. Open Safari
  2. Open Safari's Settings (Command +,)
  3. Click on General
  4. Next to File download location, make sure Downloads is selected
  5. Under that (Remove download list items), select the desired duration

Another thing I typically see is people forgetting to Empty Trash. If you're one of those people, you can have this set to be removed when an item has been in Trash for 30 days.

  1. Open Finder
  2. Open Finder's Settings (Command +,)
  3. Click on Advanced
  4. Click the checkbox next to Remove items from Trash after 30 days.

I hope this helps! Please don't hesitate to ask about a specific directory or file if needed!
