Universal Clipboard not working between iPhone 13 and MacBook Pro

my iPhone is on iOS 16.5.1 and the MacBook Pro (13 inch, M1, 2020) is running Ventura 13.4.1, which are both the most recent versions. I have tried:

  • restarting both devices
  • turning wifi and bluetooth off and back on
  • turning bluetooth sharing off and back on
  • turning handoff off and back on
  • resetting bluetooth settings
  • resetting network settings
  • signing out of my apple ID on both devices and signing back in again
  • AND reinstalling macOS on the MacBook!

after all of this, universal clipboard still does not work. i am the only user of the MacBook, so i use my administrator account regularly. i created a standard user account on it, signed in with my Apple ID on the standard user account, and universal clipboard did work on that, but still not on the administrator account that i always use.

has anyone else experienced this issue even after trying all these fixes? is there anything else i can try?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.1

I would defer to the More Learned Contributor but . . .

As the issue does appear in the Admin Account and Not in a Standard Account

Suggest the User start with Points 1 to 4 and then Test

Still having issues, move onto Steps 5 and Test Again

Still no resolve - move onto Step 6 and follow instructions therein

1 - Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

2 - Safe Mode will also eliminate Third Party Software, extensions and drivers from loading. It will only load the Minimum amount of Core Apple Processes to allow the the computer to function at a reduced Level of Performance

3 - Does the issue present in this mode ?

4 - Sometimes a Safe Boot followed by a Normal Boot will just put things right.

5 - If not - there could be something in the main User Account playing up. To further isolate this - Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac. Then log out of the Main User account and log into the dummy account and test again if the issue persists.

6 - Download the Application Etrecheck directly from the Developer.

This is a Diagnostic Tool that makes no changes to the computer.

It makes a coherent and readable inventory of both the Hardware and Software used on the computer

The application is free or paid from added features.

The Report will Not Reveal Any Personal Information.

Post back the Full Report - copy and paste - >>>> using the Additional Text Icon ( 3rd Icon to last ) <<<<

As an act of Good Faith, am including a recent Etrecheck Report as an illustration what is application can do

OK. Problem solved.

but still not on the administrator account that i always use.

Easy. Don't use that account.

The defaults.

Apple makes products for the consumer market. That means one operating system, one iPhone, one Watch, one iPad, maybe one Mac. One user on the Mac. Deviate at your peril.

Anything related to handoff, iCloud, file or data syncing is extremely fragile. Any attempts to be "clever" will cause no end of suffering. Apple Support will be of zero assistance. They only have scripts based on default usage. When you deviate from that default usage pattern, the scripts no longer apply. You are on your own in untested waters.

These services require each device to be unique. If there is any duplication, then everybody gets confused. It's like a modern Who's on First routine. Since the Mac supports multiple users, multiple boot partitions, and cloning, there are several different ways to break that unique requirement on a Mac. And remember that everything caches everything everywhere. So just because you go in and fix something doesn't mean it ever starts working. Yeah, you fixed the problems. But everybody still has the old broken data and there is no way to force an update.

I recommend you simply use your standard account. That's more secure anyway. If you ever do need administrator privileges, you can simply provide the credentials of your admin account when prompted. I've been doing this for many years. Even the new bugs introduced in Ventura don't break it too much. For Ventura, that's high praise indeed. 😄

It doesn't matter. You're someone who creates accounts. It is likely that you've done something else to confuse the system.

All I can do is tell you how it works, and what causes problems. There is no way I can peer into your devices and tell you exactly what is broken. There is no "Enable Universal Clipboard bugs" button you can just switch off.

Make sure each device is unique. For most devices, that's easy. They don't work any other way. For a Mac, make sure only a single user account is signed in to a single Apple ID. You can have multiple accounts, each with its own Apple ID. You just can't ever share Apple IDs between accounts on the same device.

I don't know the details of how this is implemented. I can't guarantee any fix. You may be able to fix this by wiping the Mac completely - down to the bare metal - and reinstalling everything. You can't restore from backup. That could restore the problem. Restore and migration assistant should only be used to transfer data and accounts from one machine to another. Never use the process to try to duplicate machines or accounts. In the future, when you setup a new account on a new device, always use iCloud and only iCloud (or nothing at all, of course).

You could still have problems in the future. I'm a developer and I'm confident that my iCloud account is already corrupt. I can't imagine that million of people are able to jump through the hoops that I must when I setup a new account. So once it's broken, it may never be fixable. Plus, none of these features are very reliable. What you are experiencing may be completely normal. All you can do is try your best and hope for the best.

1 - Building on similar theme to @sberman - notice Ad Blocker application in you report

2 - Here is something in the report I find Odd and do not understand this.

Perhaps my esteemed colleague can chip on this ?

It almost looks like it is pathed to separate Volume or possible External WD Drive
