Imac g3

Hi there, I just have got an imac g3 and it is not working. Is was working like an hour ago. But then when I restarted the computer, the red light came on, on the power button and did not change to green. I have tried to press the CUDA button but it does not change anything. Got any ideas. By the way it is a revision B trayloader.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Unfortunately, this does not appear to be an unusual problem with the iMac G3. One single reason for the behaviour has never been clearly presented. There have been speculations about everything from a weak logic board battery to damaged capacitors, bad solder joints and a faulty flyback transformer. Often, restarts are problematic, while a cold start (after having disconnected the power cable from the wall socket for a few minutes) may work (temporarily).

The logic board/drive assembly section (as described in the manual) is as far as a user should go in a tray-loading iMac G3. Other sections (such as power and video) contain dangerous high-voltage circuits, and work there must be performed by qualified personnel only. A slot-loading iMac G3 should not be opened at all by a user.

I would try removing the PRAM battery to see if it makes any difference. If the PRAM battery is too low, then it may prevent a Mac from powering on or booting. Surprisingly, many times a Mac will boot without this battery installed, but of course all the PRAM settings will be wiped including the default startup disk, date & time, mouse settings, etc. If this works, then try to get a new PRAM battery.
