mouse connects and cursor displays but does not respond.

Virtually all 'solutions' suggest doing stuff on the computer - which is difficult given that the mouse does NOT work. Have tried turning computer and mouse off and on (of course), and changing batteries (ditto) and hitting it while swearing does not seem to be efficacious.

Any doable solutions?
