iMovie vanished and cannot open imovieevent file backup

I have been working for hours on a new iMovie project but there were issues with videos that wouldn't play once placed in the timeline. Following previous advice found in the Community, I tried to quit iMovie to reopen with control+option and delete preferences, but had to Force Quit because there was a message "iMovie must complete other tasks before performing this operation" (left it alone for a couple of hours and still got the same message). On opening iMovie, as advised (with control+option), I find that the new project has vanished. I have found a Backup.imovieevent and a CurrentVersion.imovieevent in the Library with Finder (using "Show Package Contents"), but these will not open in iMovie.

Now, if iMovie cannot open an imovieevent file, then how do I access it???

HELP!

Catarina

PS: It's my daughter's 18th birthday and this movie was to be shown in the party tonight...

Hi,

When you do the delete preferences procedure iMovie opens in a new blank library. Your project won't be in it. To get back to your project you need to reopen your original library that contains the projects. To do that, close iMovie after you have done the delete preferences procedure. Then go to your Movies folder (Finder Menu/Go/Home/Movies). Your iMovie library will be in there, unless you moved it elsewhere, in which case you would need to navigate to where you moved it. Double click on the icon of the library that contains your project and iMovie will open in that library, where you can access your project.

Stay out of the Show Package Contents folder. Poking around in there can run the risk of corrupting your library.

If you still have no luck, you can retrieve your project by opening a previous backup of your library in the iMovie backups folder.

To get to the iMovie Backups folder, follow this file path from the Finder menu:

Go/Home/Library/Containers/com.apple.iMovieApp/Data/Library/Caches/iMovieBackups

NOTE:  If running Ventura, in the above file path substitute iMovie for com.apple.iMovieApp.  So, for Ventura,

the file path would read:

 Go/Home/Library/Containers/iMovie/Data/Library/Caches/iMovieBackups

When you get there you will see a list of previous backups of your iMovie library.  Click on one dated just before your issue started.  iMovie will open in that library.   Navigate to your projects browser (where your projects are displayed as icons) and see if your projects are intact.
