Macbook not charging, showing cable sign even when not plugged in

Macbook has suddenly begun not charging and takes numerous attempts and reboots inorder to get it to charge - as soon as the cable is unplugged it wont start charging again and I have to begin rebootin

even when not plugged in the mac shows a cable sign over the battery sign (shown in photos).

I reset the SMC which is the only 'fix' I can find online and still nothing, any help would be appreciated
