Apple Mail connection

I am getting this error message in Apple Mail: "There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “(My name)” or try again.

The server returned the error: Connections to the server “(My ISP's correct address as I've used since the Dawn of Time)” on the default ports timed out."

This has only just started happening. My internet connections are fine (as is the web). I have changed no settings. I went to Connection Doctor in Apple Mail and it appeared to fix the problem but next time checked Mail the same error message reappeared. I have quit Mail and restarted it. I have rebooted the computer but still the problem persists. Any hints as to what to try next would be gratefully received.

Problem (kinda) solved and lesson (kinda) learned. I subsequently visited my ISP's site and found a 'Network Status & Advisory which read: "Customers may see intermittent log in failures for both webmail and POP/IMAP. Also may see a delay in receiving emails.

Engineers are working on resolving the problem."

So there! I'll wait. :-)
