Which is better for film Atmos codec in Apple TV device (PCM) vs Apple App on smart TV (DD+)?

Which is better for receiving Atmos encoded films between using the latest Apple 4K TV 2022 device which outputs Atmos using a pcm codec (I understand pcm codec strips Atmos metadata so the film will not have the height channels i.e. is 7.1 not 7.1.4) vs the Apple TV App on a smart tv (I have a LG OLED G3 2023 that can pass through) which outputs Atmos in Dobly Digital Plus codec (so does have the mega data and has separate height channels should be 7.1.4) but is a lossy codec. My system is eARC throughout and all devices and cables hdmi 2.1 and support full Atmos using Dolby TrueHD. I also have 7.1.4 physical speakers so in direct mode a separate sound channel can be assigned to each speaker. In short use the Apple device or use the App?

The Apple TV 4K box will output Dolby Atmos in Dolby MAT format, uncompressed like PCM, with a sub-stream that represents the object based mix, to audio devices that support this. Content from commercial online streaming provider apps do not get stripped of Atmos meta data. In fact, it is very similar to Dolby Digital Plus with Atmos, as that is how it streams to the device.

What you may have heard or read about stripping Atmos information, is regarding local media files with Dolby True HD with Atmos (i.e. Blu-ray rips), and certain third party apps for the Apple TV box that allow local media sharing. Dolby True HD with Atmos is not supported with inclusion of Atmos, through the Apple TV box, as it can’t be converted to Dolby MAT by the Apple TV box.

It does not apply to content in the Apple TV app on either the Apple TV box, or on smart TVs, or on third party external streaming devices. That would be equal quality for those, unless your audio system supports Dolby Digital Plus with Atmos, but not Dolby MAT (rare these days).

I also have 7.1.4 physical speakers

Do you then use an AV receiver? Which model?

No AV receiver. I have a Bang & Olufsen BeoSound Theatre Soundbar which has integrated 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos decoding and supports all the Dolby formats including MAT; with an LG OLED G3 plus 3 sets of BeoLab 17s and a BeoLab 19 subwoofer. The soundbar has 12 power amplifiers totalling 800 watts and the speakers. Each BL17 and the BL19 subwoofer have 2 x 160 watt class D amplifiers built in.
