Air tag notification

Why do I get notifications that an air tag is following me but when I look it’s my own air tag that is with me?

esme90,

That is good to know! We want to recommend that you try resetting your AirTag to see if this may "refresh" that connection so to speak, resolving any unexpected issues such as the one you're describing. This process is straight forward and you can find the steps to give it a shot right here: How to reset your AirTag - Apple Support

We'll also copy and paste the full list here for you:

Here's how to reset your AirTag:

1. Press down on the polished stainless steel battery cover of your AirTag and rotate counterclockwise until the cover stops rotating.
2. Remove the cover and the battery.*
3. Replace the battery.
4. Press down on the battery until you hear a sound. This sound means that the battery is connected.
5. When the sound finishes, repeat the process four more times, removing and replacing the battery, then pressing down on the battery until you hear a sound. You should hear a sound each time you press on the battery, for a total of five sounds. The fifth sound is different from the previous four. This indicates that the AirTag is now ready to pair.
6. Replace the cover by aligning the three tabs on the cover with the three slots on your AirTag.
7. Press down on the cover.
8. Rotate the cover clockwise until it stops rotating.

If the issue continues to occur after setting your AirTag back up, you may want to try removing the AirTag from Find My and then registering it again. The articles below will help you try that, and again the goal here would be to refresh that connection and set it up from scratch, hopefully resolving the issue in the process.

  1. Remove an AirTag or other item from Find My on iPhone - Apple Support
  2. Add an AirTag in Find My on iPhone - Apple Support

We hope that this information is helpful.

Have a great day!

Hi there esme90,

Do you have the AirTag set up with your Find My or is it possibly set up with another family member's Apple ID in Find My? We ask because this could be why you're seeing the alert.

It's possible that the AirTag or Find My network accessory might be attached to an item you're borrowing, or you might get this alert if you’re borrowing someone else’s AirPods. If you're borrowing an AirTag or another item compatible with the Find My network from a member of your Family Sharing group, you can turn off alerts for that item for one day, or indefinitely.

You'll find more information here: What to do if you get an alert that an AirTag, Find My network accessory, or set of AirPods is with you - Apple Support

Take care.
