I’ve slightly cracked the glass of my 7th Generation iPad screen. The LCD or digitiser has not been damaged. On the Apple website it says that it might cost over £250, however I believe that with old generation iPads, I can change only the glass and not the whole scree . Is that correct? And if so, how much would it cost?

A cracked screen is a damaged screen - and should be repaired. Cracks can spread - and represent a hazard. The cover glass is the digitiser; if damaged, your iPad screen may not behave properly.
If you had the foresight to purchase the optional AppleCare+ plan for your iPad, accidental and screen damage is covered. Being an insurance product, a small excess fee is levied on the claim. Without this benefit, screen repair is charged at Apple’s standard flat-rate for the iPad model:

For practical purposes, your own iPad is unlikely to be repaired and returned to you. Instead, in lieu of repair, the iPad will be exchanged for a renewed/reconditioned iPad of the same model and specification. The replacement will have a limited warranty, new battery and casing.
