Yes (mostly*), HEVC is supported by Apple’s own apps in macOS High Sierra 10.13 or later. Using HEIF or HEVC media on Apple devices - Apple Support.

Third party apps like VLC and IINA do not have such a strict OS version dependency for this, as they use their own decoders.


(*Some video properties (e.g. hvc1 vs. hev1 for codec ID) from some encoders may throw a curveball that QuickTime doesn’t know how to deal with. See e.g.: discussions.apple.com/thread/253596557.)
