Airpods rapidly cutting in and out during iPhone call

This issue only happens on phone calls and not when I use my AirPods for music/movies, etc. I noticed it happening once when I got a text message while on a call. Sometimes when it happens I start killing all my open apps and often that helps.

That makes me suspect that it's my iPhone being overhelmed by something else running in the background while I'm on a call. It reminds me of the early days of Zoom or Skype when my Mac was doing a lot of other things while in a web meeting and I had to stop and quit Photoshop, Safari, and any other apps using RAM.

I got a brand new upgraded iPhone (iPhone 14), upgraded the OS mutiple times, reconnected the AirPods, got my AirPods replaced--and did all the other things in the support materials and forums, but it's done nothing. I turned off auto updates and anything else I can find that might be working in the background. I suspect it's an iOS system routine running in the background.

  • Are there any apps that are notorious for running in the background?

  • And is there a way to see what apps were running in the background when this starts happening?

This issue has been going on forever. I can't believe Apple hasn't figured out and addressed this yet. Whenever I call support they seem oblivious that it's an issue.

It's virtually impossible to use this phone and AirPods for business the way it is.

Thanks!
