Perhaps consider that if you are seeking simplicity - as implied in your original post - you are doing just the opposite. By far the quickest, easiest and simplest method to instantly lock your iPad screen is to just click the physical Sleep/wake button.
Uh, no. That makes assumptions about my setup you're not aware of and doesn't do what I want anyway. This is why, after going into some detail about what I want and don't want to do, I ended my OP with "So, I really am asking if anyone knows how to do the exact thing I asked about," because people always want to doubt the question. I'll explain further to demonstrate.
The physical button is not easily available for pressing, which is why I started the thread. My iPad is often in a desktop stand very close to my main display, which is to the left of the iPad. My iPad is in landscape orientation for TV viewing, so the button is on its left side, and the main display makes it inconvenient to get to for pressing. Touch ID is not a big problem; it's just awkward to press the button.
Moreover, pressing the button doesn't lock the iPad requiring passcode unless the iPad is set to "Lock immediately", which I don't want to do. Long-pressing both it and the volume button to require passcode requires even worse contortions.
Finally, I can't rotate the iPad because it's always charging in this configuration, and the cable would be in the way.
I do appreciate the pointer to the Shortcut method, though I think "Lock Screen" is a bit of a misnomer, because it locks the iPad requiring passcode even when "Lock Immediately" isn't set. Fortunately, the error is in my favor this time. I guess "hard-lock" is the unofficial term for this, but if Apple documents it anywhere, I can't find it.
