My external hard drive has only 320 GB capacity. Is it enough to back up my iMac (currently using Big Sur)
before I update to next os. If not what do I do?

It depends on two things
Appreciate you trying to help SravanKra. I read somewhere that a backup requires double the capacity of your drive, in my case it is 1TB (of which only 115GB is still available). I am not sure what is going on in my iMac, as I have more photos than anything else stored
(So what is Other???)Is this relevant?
You see I thought all of the data on my computer has to be backed up- if its just photos and a few documents, I should have no trouble? I dont have music files either, I didnt know I had podcasts, they can go.
I only have a small capacity on my external hard drive with only 185GB available and I dont know how it is formatted. I bought the Verbatim HD almost 10 years ago when I had a Microsoft laptop and now Ive had Apple for a good long while, once giving the HD to the experts for backup when my old MacBook Pro hinge broke and the data was transferred to my newer laptop. I cant even view the backup files on it. TBH I really dont know the ins and outs of backing up, so perhaps I shouldn't even go there! :(
