iCloud Contact Sync Issue

Hi there! I'm planning to switch the SIM card out on my phone and want to make sure I won't lose any of my contacts.

I thought everything (including contacts) was backed up on iCloud. However, when I log onto iCloud I only see a subset of the contacts on my iPhone (155 out of my total 1,011 contacts). I investigated and think the issue is that my "default account" setting for my contacts is "on my iPhone" instead of "iCloud."

Can anyone confirm the below is the appropriate approach to get ALL of my contacts (the 873 stored on my iPhone and the 155 stored on my iCloud) to iCloud?

Under "Apps using iCloud," toggle OFF syncing with iCloud (it is currently ON).

In the Turn off contacts pop-up that asks "What do you want to do with your contacts stored on this phone", select "Keep on my iPhone" NOT "Delete from my iPhone."

Toggle back ON syncing with iCloud for my contacts.

A pop-up should appear (cannot verify as haven't done this) that asks if I was to MERGE my contacts to iCloud. Select the "Merge" Option.

This should now have ALL 1,011 of my accounts on iCloud.

Now go to the Contacts app Settings and change my contact default account to iCloud so all the contacts I add will now automatically be uploaded to iCloud.

This did not work for me. Still have gmail and contacts not being uploaded to the cloud on my iPad.

The cloud is now the default. I tried this solution several times and it still did t work. I closed the app and restarted..nada. I rebooted the iPad…nada.

Are there any other solutions?

Hi kldull10,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities! That is correct as you'll want to merge your contacts as listed below:

Set up and use iCloud Contacts

On your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch
1. Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud.
2. Turn on Contacts.
3. When you're asked if you want to Merge or Cancel, tap Merge.
All of the information stored in Contacts is uploaded to iCloud.

Hope this helps!

Have a great day.
