Camera black during messages and texts

When texting someone I cannot take a picture or video within the iMessage/text. When I open the camera within the text message, it is black. I can take a picture in the camera application and then return to the text, but not take a picture within the message.

Things I have tried: close the application, close all applications, restart my phone, attempt to take a picture anyways even tho the screen is black, switch to video, try a forward facing picture. All black result:

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 16

It sounds like when you use your camera to take a photo from inside the Messages app, the display is black. We can help.

A good first step is to Restart your iPhone. This is often the easiest way to resolve intermittent issues. If the issue persists, next we can look at step to Update iOS on iPhone. The current version is iOS 16.5.1.

If you still have trouble after updating, or if you were already on iOS 16.5.1, you can connect with Apple directly using either Get Support or if you're in a region without direct support options, you can also Contact Apple for support and service.
