Changed appearance of icons when adding URL shortcut to Home Screen

In the past, when adding a URL shortcut to the home screen, the resulting icon showed either the favicon of the web site or a screen shot of the web page. Some months ago, this behavior changed, and I now get a monochrome icon background with a single capital letter that in some way is related to the web page.

The resulting icon is not intuitive and not helpful.

I understand that I can "customize" the icon with the "Shortcuts" app, but the process is onerous.

Any suggestion for how I can get back to the "screenshot" mode for those web sites without favicons?

Thank you!

Too bad!

Because many of the websites I want to add to my home screen will have the same icon...

A letter "L" , because the title is often (L)ogin Page.

You can't force websites to provide a Favicon. Fine, but it's too bad Apple didn't think to let us change the "Letter" to a short (maybe 1-4 characters) custom name when adding the link to the home page.

Hello Ali_E1,

Thank you for paraphrasing my question.

You write "If an icon is available for the bookmark you should see it pop up as soon as you tap the share icon. If no icon is available, the iOS software will use the first letter of the website title."

Until a few months ago, iOS used a screen shot of the web page instead of the first letter of the website title if no proprietary icon (sometimes referred to as "favicon") is available. This is illustrated in my original post.

My question is: how do I get the screen shot instead of the first letter of the web site title in those cases where no favicon is available?

Thank you!

Hello clem3000,

The icon that is used for your Home Screen bookmark will be determined by the website programming. Make sure you are following the directions outlined in the “Add a website icon to your Home Screen” of this website. If an icon is available for the bookmark you should see it pop up as soon as you tap the share icon.

Add a website icon to your Home Screen
You can add a website icon to your iPhone Home Screen for quick access.
1. While viewing the website, tap the Share button in the menu bar.
2. Scroll down the list of options, then tap Add to Home Screen.
3. If you don’t see Add to Home Screen, you can add it. Scroll down to the bottom of the list, tap Edit Actions, then tap  Add to Home Screen.
The icon appears only on the device where you add it.
In Safari, the Share button on a website has been tapped, displaying a list of options. Near the bottom of the screen is the option Add to Home Screen. Tap to add a shortcut to this website on your Home Screen.

Note: Some websites may ask for permission to send you notifications. You can change your notification settings at any time. See Change notification settings.

If no icon is available, the iOS software will use the first letter of the website title.

Cheers!
