What are the source of lyrics for Apple Music

Hello, everyone.

As a user of Apple Music, I wonder what's the source of the lyrics to the songs on this app and if the lyrics are correct? This is because I found a few mistakes on some of the lyrics on this app.

Hello aisykhafi,

I'm not sure if Apple announces where they get the lyrics from. I'm also sure they don't do this completely themselves and rely on the song artists submitting songs to also include the lyrics.

If there are incorrect lyrics within a song (on iPhone) do the following:

  1. Open Music
  2. Find the song with the mistakes
  3. Tap the More (three dots all the way to the right of the song)
  4. Tap View Full Lyrics
  5. Tap More (three dots in the upper right)
  6. Tap Report a Concern...
  7. Tap Lyrics are incorrect

I don't have any songs with mistakes, but there may be more steps after this. Just follow the onscreen instructions and give them as much information as possible if asked!

Dear,

This post might be a little outdated but I would still like to contribute to the discussion.

Apple Music does have a source, and it's a user-contributed community dubbed Musixmatch. It's like Wikipedia for lyrics, seriously. There are levels though (Beginner, Curator, Specialist) you have to reach for some songs, because it would be quite chaotic if everyone could mess with lyrics on all songs. Despite the "user-contributed" being its attribute, it functions surprisingly great.

They also provide lyrics to Spotify, Shazam, Vevo, Instagram and others. Leveling up over there is quite easy! I'm a curator myself, just under a month of some song listening and syncing you can too, but I doubt it you would really have time or energy to do that if you only want to change a few words in a specific song. (ask me if you want me to check up on a song 😁)

Anyways, if there are lyrics that are wrong, at any time you can jump over to musixmatch.com or install their app to check whether it's unlocked or someone with higher rank has edited it previously. In some, but very rare cases (probably 5%-10% of all songs), edits on MM will not show up in the Music app, because artists/record label companies have added their own. In that case, just follow the previous reply!

Hey. This is late, I know, but here's how Apple Music gets lyrics:

  1. In-house lyric storing (artist-provided lyrics). These will often come as non-synced however some do come synced, mostly with popular artists. They are obviously 100% correct as they come from the artist, however not all are formatted properly.
  2. Genius Lyrics. Apple Music has a partnership with Genius, and they source some lyrics from there. These are oftentimes approved by the site's staff so they're likely to have no mistakes, however, some do have a few when they're automatically scraped from the site. When they're approved, they mostly do come synced however not when automatically scrapped.
  3. Musixmatch Lyrics. Similarly to Genius, Apple Music has a partnership with Musixmatch. These are synced most of the time. The number of lyrics being sourced from Musixmatch has decreased significantly after their maintenance, so for newer songs, they are sourced from one of the two I listed above.

Hope this helps!
