Time Machine backups on portable hdd

Why aren't some documents opening from portable hdd? Saying Word doc unable to read??

You don't open TM backed up files directly. That can damage the dataset.

You restore the file in question then open it normally: Restore items backed up with Time Machine on Mac - Apple Support
