Just what it says on the tin. When I open the Message app, I see there is a text from someone, and I see the two lines of preview for it. then, I tap the arrow to open the conversation, and nothing appears (and I cannot respond).
Help?

We're not finding how you would be seeing just a 2 line preview when using Apple's Messages app.
However, make sure you are using the latest iOS 12 version on your iPhone, which is iOS 12.5.7:

You can check at Settings > General > About. If you need to update:
