Apple/Google maps goes dark while using it

However, it sounds like your iPhone is locking when using Apple Maps and Google Maps. Right? This may be expected depending on your auto-lock settings and depending upon whether your iPhone is connected to power. Try connecting your iPhone to the charger when using it for maps, if possible. You can also check and temporarily change your Auto-Lock setting to never if needed. Check out the following guidance from Keep the iPhone display on longer - Apple Support.

You can set how long it takes iPhone to automatically lock.

Go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock, then choose a length of time."
