Apple Music on MacOS 13.4.1 moved media to new location but music app thinks tracks are at old location when done

Moved my Apple Music library to a new faster storage device via:

music -> settings -> files -> <changed to new location> - keep music media folder organized set

file -> library -> organize library -> consolidate files - copied my tracks to the new location

checking back with music->settings -> files - new location ('ftunes" is retained so all looks good

Might not be important, but I then moved the old media location to a new name (i.e from "music" to "backup/music" so it's out of the way

Exported the music library so Roon could pick up the new location for say playlist items etc

So, all of that seemed fine. But when I use music app, check a tracks' location, it's pointing to the old, now renamed location.

I've tried this 3 times now thinking for example I was exiting music too quickly and it wasn't having time to update each tracks' locations in its database, etc. And each time the music library eventually has the old location for all of the tracks.

Anyway I can get Apple Music to remember that all the tracks are at my new location!?

Thanks.

Hmm, that is supposed to be the way to do it. Try explicitly reselecting the library you want Music to use by holding down option as you launch Music. Close and then try holding down option+cmd as you launch Music to open it in its safe mode. The first step ensures Music isn't somehow opening a cached copy of the library that it then doesn't update properly when you close. The second may repair any internal inconsistencies in the library. Now try once again and see if the new paths will stick.

The "missing file" issue with exclamation marks happens if the file is no longer where iTunes or Music expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, one of its parent folders, the drive it lives on has had a name change, or you've moved a non-portable library to a different path (see Make a split library portable for details). It is also possible that iTunes or Music have changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout, or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place, (see the iTunes Media Organization section of Managing your Mac media libraries - Apple Community for details) or that you've been too aggressive when deleting duplicates at some point.

Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Cmd-I to get Song Info, then click No when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the file tab for the location the library thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drives. Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, a folder renamed, or a drive label has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions. If the difference between the two paths is an additional Music folder in one path then this is a layout issue. I can explain further if that is the case. If everything is where it is supposed to be try Repair security permissions for iTunes for Mac - Apple Community.

In some cases the library may be able to repair itself if you go through the same steps with Get Info, or when playing a track, but this time click Locate and browse to the lost track. It may then offer to attempt to automatically fix other broken links. Although it says something like "use the same location" I think it expects to find the tracks in the same artist & album layout they were in previously, with one systematic change to the path.

If you want me to try to provide specific advice please post back the following details:

  1. The location of the media folder under iTunes|Music > Preferences > Advanced
  2. The location of a sample missing track shown under Song Info > File > Location that begins file://
  3. The true path to the file whose details you gave in 2

Copy the Music Library.musiclibrary database to a new path. Option-start-Music to access the library on the new path. Add a new playlist folder named for example ! Check Me ! then close the library. Reopen to see if the modification is still there. Now see if you can consolidate the media and if the new locations will be preserved through closing and opening Music.

Thanks for the idea but seems to be solved now.

Put in a call to apple support and after 8 transfers got to someone in the right group. They suggested I take the previous location offline. When I did that music showed the tracks in their new location. So somehow music knew about multiple locations and I couldn't force it to chose the new one. I then deleted the source and music now sticks with the new location.

Unfortunately lots of tracks seem to be missing, so have to start dealing with that...

Then you need move the files that you've copied out of the way, declare the location of the media folder that you want Music to use, and use File > Library > Organize Library to copy over the files and update the references.

An alternative approach might be to use my script but edit it such that it also attempts to find a new location for tracks that aren't currently broken. The key is that telling Music to use a new media folder location doesn't in itself update any existing path records in the database.

I believe what you are advising is what I did (see the 1st paragraph).

Essentially:

I update my media library location

I tell Apple Music to organize my library

It copies the tracks where they are supposed to go.

I can even export the library to an .itl file and the locations are correct (the new location).

But sometime later I check my track locations in music and they are back to the original location.

Perhaps your script is the way to go if apple support can't solve this...

Thanks for the ideas. But... same effect.

Set my location to the new one, organized my library (music copied the tracks).

At that point, checking track info showed the new location.

Quit music, option -clicked and selected the current library - tracks shown as previous locations.

Quit music, option+command, music opened in safe mode - tracks shown as previous locations.

Truly odd!
