Apple TV remote won't pair

I have an Apple TV (Model 1842) and I lost the remote for it. I got a new remote (Model A2854) but I cannot pair it. The TV keeps saying bring the remote closer but it won't pair.

I moved to a new house, new WIFI, so I am pretty sure the box is not connected to WIFI.

I searched through the forums:

  • I removed all other bluetooth devices from the room to avoid interference. It didn't work.
  • I tried to connect with my iPhone but the app couldn't find the Apple TV. (most likely because it is not on the same network)
  • In the forums, they recommend upgrading the TV OS but I cannot do anything without a remote.
  • I tried resetting the remote by pressing the square and - buttons. I also unplugged/plugged Apple TV several times.
  • I took it to Apple store, they said there's too much interference with other devices, so they sent me back home to try again.

I am out of ideas. How can I connect my new remote to Apple TV?

Update/Resolution: It turned out that the Apple TV OS had to be updated. I took it to an Apple store, they had an old remote with which they applied the updates. The new remote paired instantly after the update.

Hi yetkin160!

Follow these steps to pair your Apple TV Remote:

  1. Charge Remote for 30 minutes
  2. Turn on the Apple TV with an iPhone on the same network
  3. Put the remote three inches away from the Apple TV
  4. Hold the Menu and Volume Up Button
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen
