Photos - Repair Library Permissions

Hi all - when I did my last update, Ventura 13.4.1, my Photo's won't open, instead I get this message:

Repair Library Permissions - This photo library is locked or you do not have permissions to make changes to it. Photos can try to repair the permissions."

Whenever I hit "repair," it gets to 100% and freezes.

Any ideas?

Many thanks!

Tim

Where is your Photos Library stored? Is it in your Pictures folder or somewhere else?

If you are keeping the library on an external drive, make sure, the external drive is prepared as described here: Move your Photos library to save space on your Mac - Apple Support

macOS Ventura is much more particular about the correct formatting of an external drive than the previous system version, which allowed us to keep the library in an unsafe location.

In short: if your library is on external drive

  • The external drive should be locally mounted with a wired connection, not over the local network
  • The file system format should be MacOS Extended (Journaled) or APFS
  • The external drive should not have been used for Time Machine backups or have other backup software installed.

If your library is not on an external drive, make sure, that Photos is trying to open the correct Photos Library. If you are having several Photos Libraries quit Photos, then double-click the library you want to open to direct Photos to the correct library.
