Books crashing continuously iPadOS 16.3.1

Since I installed iPadOS 16.3.1, Books crashes almost immediately I open it. I have followed all the suggestions to try to fix it except I have not deleted the App and reinstalled. I have many of my own pdf files in Books stored on my iPad and I don’t know what might happen to them if I delete the App and reinstall. Can anyone tell me please? I do not want to lose my pdf files.

I have just copied all my pdf files which were in Books into a folder in Files, thus using them as a backup on my iPad. I then offloaded the Books app, closed all apps and Force restarted my iPad. Yes, all my pdfs remained in Books after I reloaded the App. The crashing issue changed slightly in that Books crashes after maybe 2 minutes instead of a few seconds. From other reading I have done, I’m inclined to believe other people’s opinions that Books is an unstable app in iPadOS 16.3.1 and hopefully it will be fixed in the next update.

What does iCloud back up? - Apple Support:

What iCloud Backup includes

Your iPhone and iPad backups include all the information and settings stored on your device that don't already sync to iCloud.

App data

iCloud Backup includes app data for the apps that you've downloaded on your device. This includes data for third-party social media apps, games, and messaging apps, as well as apps from Apple that don't sync with iCloud.

If the app uses iCloud Drive to store data, that information is stored in iCloud instead of your iCloud Backup.

Your backup includes your pdfs.

I did try a Force restart which made no difference. I also emptied cache and other unwanted apps and files to make sure I have more space on my iPad. (I have only used about half of the storage.) I also read a number of articles which said iCloud backup sometimes only saves an app plus info such as purchase history in Books and not necessarily all your individual separate files. I do an iCloud backup of my iPad every night. I have not found or read anything that answers my question directly.
