Iphone XR how to download photos from icloud onto phone memory - to free space on icloud

Hi - Iphone XR how to download photos from icloud onto phone memory - to free space on icloud- i have 128gb phone storage that is not currently utilised

Tried settings icloud - photos - will not let me sync phone as icloud storage is full

Tried manage storage - photos- then not sure whether to turn off & delete from icloud - and this will then allow to download photos to phone memory.

Sorry, but you can't remove photos that you sync with iCloud, without having them removed form any other to iCloud Photos connected device.

In your case you should copy the photos to your computer and/or increase the storage space in iCloud.

iCloud Photos works the other way around.

Once the device that {took/acquired} a photo has finished uploading it, iCloud Photos keeps a full-resolution copy of the photo in iCloud (where it counts against your iCloud storage). It stays there until deleted. Deleting the photo on any device causes it to be deleted everywhere.

You can set up your iPhone and/or your Mac so that when they run low on local storage, they automatically dump some full-resolution local copies (on the theory that you can re-download full-resolution copies from iCloud – on an as-needed basis – later).

But to free iCloud storage without losing photos, you need to make a permanent copy of your photos (a copy that lives outside of any Photos Library linked to iCloud Photos) before deleting those photos from iCloud.
