iPhone battery drains when device is turned off

The battery of a brand new iPhone SE 3rd gen. drains significantly when it is off over night (see screenshots). I had the phone replaced for a new one some weeks ago and now this problem happens again.

I did a factory reset, several calibrations of the battery, use a power adapter and cable both of Apple brands and did not overcharge the device. The battery report says the battery had 100% capacity. That was the same for the first device before it was replaced. I use the power adapter and cable with two other another iPhone, iPod and iPad for years and never had any problems with it.

The drainage occurred two time so far. It was more often with the first device and the time between the drainage shortened little by little. I am afraid it will be too for the current iPhone.

I have AppleCare+ but I would like to avoid another replacement, if Apple would do it anyway, because there seems no problem with the phone. The support could not find any issue with the battery and other hardware at the remote checkup last time.

If your iPhone's battery is draining even when it's not in use, there could be a few possible reasons for this issue. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the problem:

  1. Go to Settings > Battery and see which apps or processes are consuming the most battery. If you notice any particular app using an unusually high amount of battery in the background, it might be the cause of the drain.
  2. Some apps refresh their content in the background, which can consume battery. You can disable background app refresh for specific apps by going to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and toggle off the apps you don't need to update in the background. go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and turn on Background App Refresh. -->Switch apps on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
  3. If you have multiple email accounts set up on your iPhone and use the push email feature, it can drain your battery. Instead, consider changing your email settings to fetch data manually or at longer intervals. Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts > Fetch New Data and adjust the settings accordingly.
    1. Push Mail: Whenever possible the email client will push mails to all your devices.
  4. Fetch Mail: You need to set How you want it to be fetched, Automatically, Manually , Hourly,Every 30 mins, every 15 mins
      1. Automatically: will fetch when the iPhone is powered and on WiFi
      2. Manually: with fetch when you open email, open Inbox and swipe down
  5. You get an email notification as soon as the client server receives an email and your device is connected to internet, irrespective of whether the mail is in your device's Inbox or not
  6. Some apps constantly track your location in the background, which can use significant battery power. You can manage and restrict the location access for apps by going to Settings > Privacy > Location Services and adjust the settings for individual apps.
  7. Keep an eye on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings. Sometimes, if Wi-Fi or Bluetooth is left on even when not in use, it can contribute to battery drain. Make sure to turn off these features when you don't need them.
  8. Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary software glitches. Turn off your iPhone, wait for a few seconds, and then turn it back on.
    1. Restart the device. That's it.
    2. Still not solved --> Force restart iPhone - Apple Support
  9. If the issue persists, you can try resetting all settings on your iPhone. This will not erase your data but will reset all personalized settings to their default values. Go to Settings > General > Transfer & Reset > Reset > Reset All Settings and confirm the action. Note that you will need to reconfigure your settings afterward. All settings—including network settings, the keyboard dictionary, the Home screen layout, location settings, privacy settings, and Apple Pay cards—are removed or reset to their defaults. No data or media are deleted.
    1. Reset All Settings: Return iPhone settings to their defaults - Apple Support:- Return iPhone settings to their defaults
    2. You can return settings to their defaults without erasing your content.
    3. If you want to save your settings, back up your iPhone before returning them to their defaults. For example, if you’re trying to solve a problem but returning settings to their defaults doesn’t help, you might want to restore your previous settings from a backup.
  10. Make sure you have the latest updates installed.
    1. Update Over-the-Air (OTA) —> Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support (IN)
    2. Update using iTunes/Finder —> Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support (IN)

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it is recommended to reach out to Apple Support or visit an authorized service center for further assistance. They can provide specific guidance based on your device model and iOS version.

Thank you but please don't give advices in boilerplate form just to increase your score here. As I wrote, the iPhone is completely switched off, so no background tasks, e-mailing or push notifications take place. I also wrote, that I already did factory resets. Almost all of your points refer to devices which are in standby mode, not switched off.

  1. Check for Background Apps: Make sure no apps are running in the background. You can close apps that are running by double-clicking the home button (on older iPhone models) or swiping up from the bottom of the screen (on newer models) and swiping the apps away.
  2. Update iOS: Ensure your iPhone is running the latest version of iOS. Sometimes, software updates address battery life issues. You can check for updates in Settings > General > Software Update.
  3. Disable Unnecessary Features: Turn off features like Background App Refresh, Location Services, and Push Email if you don't need them constantly.
  4. Optimize Battery Charging: In Settings > Battery > Battery Health, enable "Optimized Battery Charging" to help prolong your battery's lifespan.
  5. Monitor Battery Usage: Check which apps or services are consuming the most battery by going to Settings > Battery. This can help you identify any particular apps causing excessive drain.
  6. Reset All Settings: If the problem persists, you can try resetting all settings. This will not erase your data but will restore all settings to their default. Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings.
  7. Contact Apple Support: If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it's advisable to contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store. They can conduct a thorough assessment to identify and resolve any underlying hardware or software problems.

Given that you have AppleCare+, it's a good idea to leverage it for a resolution, especially if the issue persists. Apple should be able to assist you in resolving the problem with your device.

Thank you for your time to write this long text but it is not helpful. It is just a generic list of tips which one can try for almost every problem. I think I made clear what the issue is. The iPhone is completely off. That means, nothing is running in the background. All updates were made.

I let the iPhone replaced for a new device by Apple via Apple Care, because even ambiguer lever support agent did not find any solution. I hope, they can find the problem as it occurs only a few times in a few days. The last time it took three weeks to appear. Then it occurred three times one after the other night.

It is the second brand new iPhone SE with this problem which I had to give back. I hope to get my deposit for the replacement back.
