It’s highly likely that the boot HDD is failing.

If you have another compatible Mac, you can set the iMac to boot from the 2nd Mac via Target Disk Mode to see how the iMac works, and backup/transfer useful files and apps by Time Machine or file/folder copy.

Otherwise, you can try to boot into single user mode by pressing Cmd+S, and log in to this text based environment. After that, you can run a few disk diag commands, such as

/sbin/fsck -fy

Then if it verifies that the HDD is failing, you may consider reinstall and migrate the OS to an external USB/TB disk. An SSD is recommended.

Overall, the most common problems for iMacs are HDDs. Over the years from 2007 I have experienced 2 painful HDD failures.

Hi,

There could be 2 reasons:

  1. HDD fails:

Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac: Apple Diagnostics, formerly known as Apple Hardware Test, can check your Mac for hardware issues.

If you think your Mac might have a hardware issue, you can use Apple Diagnostics to help determine which hardware component might be at fault.

Intel processor

  1. Turn on your Mac, then immediately press and hold the D key on your keyboard as your Mac starts up.
  2. Release when you see a progress bar or you're asked to choose a language.

If using the D key doesn't work, press and hold Option (⌥)-D at startup instead. If neither method works, review the guidelines for using key combinations at startup.

2.OS crashed: Required reinstallation OS. However, if data is important then you required to do recover data first then reinstall macOS.
