How can I tell if I have active Apple TV? I have the app on my phone and also can I use it on my TV

Have you subscribed to the Apple TV service?

If you have then you can sign in with the app on you phone or the app on your TV. If you get an error message when attempting to use the service, then describe what you are seeing.
